Active Transportation Planning Intern (Part-Time)

We're hiring a part-time Active Transportation Planning Intern.  The ideal candidate is a motivated, bilingual graduate student. The position focuses on Vision Zero, Safe Routes to School, and other active transportation planning projects. This is a remote-first position that requires 2-3 days per month in office in Torrance, CA. Please be currently enrolled in a graduate program and eager to gain hands-on experience in multimodal transportation planning, community engagement, and grant writing. This position requires some evening and weekend availability to staff community engagement events.


This is a unique opportunity to learn and develop your skills in project management, community engagement, technical writing, and grant preparation. You'll gain practical transportation planning experience working in a creative and collaborative small-team environment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Assist project manager and coordinate with team members, clients, and stakeholders on active transportation planning projects

  • Assist with planning and coordinating community engagement activities and materials

  • Create maps, graphics, technical documents, reports, and presentations

  • Maintain project files and documentation

  • Perform administrative duties

  • Contribute to proposal development and marketing materials

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduate student in Urban Planning, Transportation Planning, Communications, Public Policy, Geography, or related field

  • Bilingual: Fluent in English and either Spanish or Mandarin (written and spoken)

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in both languages

  • Interest and willingness to develop public speaking / presenting skills

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

  • Self-motivated with ability to work independently in a remote environment

  • Reside in Southern California with ability to commute to Torrance, CA 2-3 days per month

  • Reliable personal transportation for attending in-office days and in-person events meetings throughout Southern California region

  • Strong internet connection and dedicated home office space for remote work

PREFFERED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Coursework or experience in transportation planning, especially active transportation

  • Familiarity with mapping software (ArcGIS, QGIS), graphic design software (Adobe Creative Suite, Canva)

  • Experience with community engagement or public outreach

  • Understanding of equity and environmental justice principles in transportation

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to work at a computer workstation for extended periods

  • Ability to commute to office location in Torrance, CA 2-3 days per month

  • Ability to travel to project locations and meetings throughout Southern California

  • Ability to lift or maneuver bulky and/or heavy items such as folding tables, folding easels, canopy, project boards, etc. as required to set up for public events or booths

  • Occasional evening and weekend work will be required for events or public meetings

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This is a hybrid, part-time, at-will position. The intern will primarily work from their home office with 2-3 days per month required in office in Torrance, CA, plus regional travel for meetings, site visits, and community events throughout Southern California.

COMPENSATION

Pay range: $30-32 per hour, depending on experience and educational background. Part-time position ranging from 15-20 hours per week, with flexible scheduling to accommodate academic commitments.
